Type Locality and Naming

Named after Madumabisa Hill near Hwange (formerly Wankie) in northwestern Zimbabwe. It was formally defined as the middle unit of the thick Madumabisa Mudstone succession by Geoffrey Bond, who utilized distinct lithological and paleontological changes to separate the massive mudstone sequence into three manageable divisions. Included in Beaufort Gr in Mid-Zambezi Basin

Lithology and Thickness

Unlike the pale, oxidized, and nodule-rich Upper Madumabisa, the Middle Madumabisa consists predominantly of dark grey to black carbonaceous shales and mudstones.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Conformably and transitionally overlies the Lower Madumabisa Mudstones Fm

Upper contact

Conformably and transitionally overlain by the pale green/grey, non-carbonaceous, nodule-bearing mudstones of the Upper Madumabisa Mudstones Fm.

Regional extent

Widespread in the subsurface and exposed along the margins of the Mid-Zambezi Basin in Zimbabwe and Zambia. Upper Ecca Gr to lowermost Beaufort Gr equivalent.
